The Foundation, which is dedicated to making home a place where families and children thrive, approved eight grants benefiting Alexandra during the first six months of 2008. The Foundation focuses its investing in primarily three areas: Stable Homes/Stable Families, Foster Care and Adoption, and Academic and Career Success.
Organizations serving Alexandria that received grants between January and June 2008 included:
College Summit, Inc. received $50,000.00 to provide 18 under resourced schools in the Washington metropolitan area with the tools, training and resources needed to ensure that 2,700 low-income students are ready to enroll in college upon high school graduation.
DC Central Kitchen, Inc. received $25,000.00 to support the delivery of 115,000 meals per year to seven shelters, transitional living facilities and social service programs which serve homeless families in the Washington metropolitan area.
Korean American Family Counseling Center received $15,000.00 to educate and empower Korean at-risk children and youth and their parents in the Washington metropolitan region through individual and family counseling, active parenting workshops and a mentoring program for youth.
La Clinica del Pueblo received $12,500.00 to provide comprehensive mental health services to 80 vulnerable children, youth and their families in the District of Columbia.
Northern Virginia Family Service received $50,000.00 to support intensive home visiting program for first-time parents at risk of child abuse or neglect or other poor childhood outcomes in Alexandria, VA.
Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS) received $25,000.00 to provide specialized, culturally competent mental health services to cultural minority children and families in Northern Virginia who have experienced or are highly vulnerable to domestic and other family violence.
SCAN of Northern Virginia received $25,000.00 to support the parent and public education programs and Court Appointed Advocate program to prevent child abuse and neglect in Northern Virginia.
The Reading Connection received $50,000.00 to provide the Read A Loud program and additional literacy services to homeless families, working in partnership with 14 homeless organizations in the Washington metropolitan area.
