Freddie Mac is #1 Corporate Philanthropist in Region
Freddie Mac is first among Washington, DC area corporations in its contributions to the community, according to the Washington Business Journal. Overall, Freddie Mac's philanthropic giving – which included Freddie Mac and Freddie Mac Foundation contributions – totaled $34.8 million in 2005. Of this, nearly $22.1 million went to make a difference in the Washington, DC region. Freddie Mac also ranked in the top 10 for our in-kind volunteer hours, with employee volunteers donating 12,904 hours to good causes.
The Washington Business Journal released its annual ranking of the largest corporate philanthropists in the Washington, DC metropolitan area during the Ninth Annual Greater Washington Business Philanthropy Summit, which is organized by Greater DC Cares and the Washington Business Journal and sponsored by Freddie Mac and other leading local companies. The summit is the region's premier forum for recognizing and supporting corporate philanthropy in the local business community. The ranking appears this week in the Washington Business Journal's Greater Washington Business Philanthropy Guide. Other corporations in the top five list include Fannie Mae, Verizon Communications, Smith Barney/Citigroup and Chevy Chase Bank. The report cited our response to helping families affected by the devastation caused by the Gulf Coast hurricanes as a proud moment for the company. Also noted was America Builds on the National Mall, our post-hurricane volunteer effort with Habitat for Humanity to build frames for 51 homes that were shipped to the Gulf region. All 51 homes are now in place and nearly complete. Hundreds of Freddie Mac employees participated in this initiative. In all, Freddie Mac has invested more than $280 million around the metropolitan region and the nation over the past 16 years. Through its corporate giving, Freddie Mac strengthens communities by supporting housing and local charitable initiatives, and through the Freddie Mac Foundation, it works to strengthen families by preventing child abuse, finding homes for foster children, and developing youth.
