Adoptive and Foster Parent Resources

Resources for Adoptive, Foster Parents

Tax Benefits for Adoptive Parents
The Internal Revenue Service now allows adoptive parents to take a tax credit of up to $10,160 for qualifying expenses paid to adopt an eligible child (including a child with special needs). And, in some cases, adoptive parents may also exclude up to $10,160 from their gross annual income for employer-paid or reimbursed adoption expenses. Complete details about the current tax benefit for adoption are available on the IRS website.

Understanding Adoption Laws
The American Bar Association Center on Children and the Law offers information and publications on legal issues related to foster care and adoption. The National Adoption Information Clearinghouse also provides an array of legal information, including products related to state adoption laws.

Sharing the Experience: You're Not Alone
Adopting a child is a very personal experience. But it's also an experience that is shared by thousands of families each year. Being able to talk to and share experiences with other adoptive parents can be very helpful throughout the adoption process—from preparing for adoption to handling post-adoption adjustments. The Learning Center, an online service of the National Adoption Center, hosts moderated chats and offers computer-based training, a free online adoption newsletter and other electronic resources.
